Dear Road Church Friends,

President’s Day weekend is already upon us. It’s an opportunity to reflect upon our founding principles and our founding fathers, especially George Washington. I have included in this week’s letter a prayer for our new nation composed by our first President. He was a remarkable man who believed in Divine Providence. He was just the man we needed at the critical time of our nation’s founding. The united states were a temporary alliance formed under his leadership to achieve a common goal: independence. His command of the Continental Army was like herding cats. The 13 colonies had never cooperated to this degree before. There were critical moments when the whole enterprise would have fallen apart were it not for his leadership. What enabled him to master every challenge was his unshakable belief in our founding principles of liberty and brotherhood, toward which he believed Divine Providence was moving America and the world. In our day we need Washington’s fervent faith in our first principles which have their roots in Jesus’ moral teachings. More about this in my Sunday message.

SCRIPTURE

Genesis 45:4-5 NLT

Please, come closer,” he said to them. So they came closer. And he said again, “I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into slavery in Egypt. But don’t be angry with yourselves for what you did to me. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives.”

Luke 6:27-31 NLT

Jesus said, To you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also. “Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back.” Do to others as you would like them to do to you.

SERMON:  “THE RIVER OF GOD’S LOVE”

HIS TASK AND OURS

August, revered, our nation’s sire,

By years of toil, through battles dire,

You bought for us our far flung land,

A home for free men dreamed and planned.

God grant that we who praise your name

And priceless worth, who hail your fame,

Shall through the years, undaunted, plan

To make the world a home for man.

PRAYER FOR THE NATION

To the Great Lord and Ruler of Nations, we beseech you to pardon our national and other transgressions; enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our national government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a government of wise, just and constitutional laws, discreetly executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereign nations, and to bless them with good governments, peace and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and grant to all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as you alone know to be best.
