Dear Road Church Friends,

Six days after Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you think I am?”—Jesus asked Peter, James, and John to go with him on a mountain hike. Near the summit they stopped to rest. Suddenly Jesus was transformed before them. He became so bright they had to shield their eyes. Then they saw two men talking with him. Somehow they knew they were Moses and Elijah. This went on until Peter said to Jesus, “We should build three shrines on this site to commemorate what happened here. Then, a bright cloud appeared above them, and from it a loud voice said, “Jesus is my Son, listen to him.” At the sound of it they fainted out of fear. The next thing they remembered, Jesus was telling them they had nothing to fear. On their way down the mountain they pondered what this might mean. And people have wondered ever since. Gather with us Sunday when we will ponder the meaning of the Transfiguration together.

SCRIPTURE:  Matthew 17:1-8   SERMON: Listen to My Beloved Son

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him! When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Get up and do not be afraid. And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.

THE NAME OF WASHINGTON

America, the land beloved, today reveres the name of him

Whose character was free from guile, whose fame the ages cannot dim.

They called him proud but erred therein, no lord was he though high of birth,

Though sprung from England’s lofty peers, he served the lowliest of earth.

He turned his back on pride of name, on motherland and luxury,

To weld a horde of quarreling men into a nation proudly free.

Wherever liberty is found, wherever shines fair freedom’s sun,

Men count America a friend and bless the name of Washington.

Blessings to you all,
