Dear Road Church Friends,

At the heart of our Christian faith is the profound and revolutionary affirmation by Jesus in the first two words of the Lord’s Prayer,—“Our Father.” This is the greatest of all prayers. It is beautiful, brief, but comprehensive. It says more about Jesus’ outlook on life and reveals the themes of his teaching better than anything else in the Gospels. This prayer is known as the Lord’s Prayer because there is so much of Jesus in it. One of its petitions is, “Give us today our daily bread,” but the prayer itself is meant to be a daily serving of spiritual bread to nourish and strengthen our faith, our minds and our souls. Something worth saying from the heart every day.

The subject of my sermon this Sunday deals with this prayers’ opening words, “Our Father.” When Jesus addressed God as “our Father” he was inviting us into the family room of Gods’ house. In giving us this prayer, Jesus gave us permission to take our shoes off and make ourselves feel at home in Gods’ presence. This represented a religious revolution that turned the world of religion upside down. It says God is still on his throne, but we, his children, are in God’s lap.

As we gather this Sunday to partake of the Lord’s Supper, we do so knowing that our Abba, our heavenly father, delights in our company around his supper table.

SCRIPTURE   Matthew 6:9-13         SERMON TITLE: God Our Father

“So pray this way: Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored, may your kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we ourselves have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.”

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD

Back of the loaf is the snowy flour,

And back of the flour the mill,

And back of the mill is the wheat and shower,

And the sun and the Father’s will.

May the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you.
