Dear Road Church Friends,

Jesus had an eye to notice small things and a heart to love and appreciate them. When his disciples were shooing kids away, Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me. The kingdom of God belongs to them.” Jesus came to show us what God the Father is like. When he said God’s loving eye is fixed even on sparrows, he meant that our Heavenly Father is a God of small things. Jesus’ insight into the divine mind is both a lesson to live by and a source of great encouragement. The life of faith is focused on small things, because God sees them as big things, like offering a cup of cold water to a thirsty stranger, or giving our last two cents to God even if it’s all we have. Doing small acts of kindness every day is something everyone can do. There is great reward in doing them and they make a big difference.

The title of my Sunday sermon is: Our Father in Heaven is a God of Small Things.

SCRIPTURES

Mark 12:41-44 Jesus sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two copper pennies. Then he said to his disciples, “That poor widow has put in more than all the others because they have contributed out of their abundance; but she is desperately poor and has given all she had to live on.”

Matthew 10:42  Whoever gives even a cup of cold water to someone in need—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”

AT SET OF SUN

If you sit down at set of sun

And count the acts that you have done

And, counting, find

One self-denying deed, one word

That eased the heart of him who heard—

One glance most kind,

That fell like sunshine where it went—

Then you may count that day well spent.

But if through all the lifelong day,

You’ve cheered no heart by yea or nay—

If through it all

You’ve nothing done that you can trace

That brought the sunshine to one face—

No act most small

That helped some soul and nothing cost—

Then count that day as worse than lost.

by George Eliot

May God’s loving kindness be with us all, even in the small details of our life.
