Dear Road Church Friends,

Tomorrow’s Communion service homily is a reflection on the theme of humility based on Jesus’ surprising demonstration of love and humility when he became a lowly servant to his disciples as they were gathered around the Passover supper table. John sees this act of love and humility, as revealing the greatness of Jesus’ character more than anything else he did. In washing his disciples feet he showed the world that in the sight of God the highest honor goes to those who perform the lowliest and most menial acts of service to others. Humility is grounded in love. Jesus said if you do as I have done you will be greatly blessed. Tomorrow we will see examples of how humility translates into greatness.

                               SERMON TITLE: Jesus’ Greatest Hour

SCRIPTURE:  John 13:1-8, 12-15, 17

Jesus and his disciples had gathered for Passover. Jesus knew that his greatest hour had come, and that the Father had given him complete power. He had always loved his disciples, and now he showed them the full extent of his love. So he got up from the table, took off his outer garment, and tied a towel around his waist. Then he poured some water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Why are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus said, “You will understand later.” Peter declared, “Never at any time will you wash my feet!” “If I do not wash your feet,” Jesus answered, “you will no longer be my disciple.” After Jesus had washed their feet, he put his outer garment back on and returned to his place at the table. “Do you understand what I have just done to you?” he asked. “You call me Teacher and Lord, and it is right that you do so, because that is what I am. I, your Lord and Teacher, have just washed your feet. You, then, should wash one another's feet. I have set an example for you, so that you will do just what I have done for you. Now that you know this truth, how happy you will be if you put it into practice!”

Blessing to you all.

Pastor Norm
