Dear Road Church Members and Friends,

This Sunday, August 1st is communion Sunday. I hope you can join us as our hearts and minds are united in remembrance of Jesus around his table. In John’s account of the Supper, Jesus washed his disciples feet before the meal. This self-humbling act made a deep impression on them that night. But Jesus also intended that his example would have lasting significance. He said, “You don’t know what I am doing now, but later you will understand.” This suggests there is something more to this than meets the eye. His intent wasn’t to turn foot washing into a ritual. Perhaps Jesus was demonstrating that somehow washing and caring for each other’s feet is the essence of the Christian life. We will explore this thought at greater length in our communion service tomorrow.

SCRIPTURE  John 13:3-8, 12-15    SERMON TITLE:  “SPIRITUAL FOOT CARE”

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered, “You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.”

After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord—So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.”

Who seeks for heaven alone to save his soul.

May keep the path, but will not reach the goal,

While he who walks in love may wander far,

But God will bring him where the Blessed are.

May the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you.
